A Follow-Up Assignment on Sign Language

I. Look for a way to connect and engage with the deaf community where you live. For example, this may be through a community organization, through a church where sign language interpreting takes place, through a friend or family member that you know, or so on.

II. After spending some time in this context, prepare a reflection on your experience, responding to some or all of the following questions as is appropriate:

    • Was it difficult for you to get connected with the deaf community or was it easy to find people to talk to?
    • Did you find this an enriching experience? Did it broaden your perspective in any way? Why or why not?
    • Can you imagine yourself becoming involved in or an advocate for translations into sign language in your region in the future? Why or why not?
    • Do you know of any sign language translation projects currently ongoing in your country? If so, who or what organization has been their main support? (i.e. a Bible society? SIL? a church group?) Or are there any current plans to undertake such a project?

Your reflection can be submitted either in written form (1200 words) or a recorded video (5 min).
