A warm welcome...

The facilitators extend a warm welcome to all participants in this seminar on Bible Translation and Church Interpreting: Challenges and Synergies. This is the first event to bring together scholars and practitioners from both the well-established field of Bible Translation and the newer field of Church Interpreting — new, that is, in terms of research, but with a history of 2000 years of practice, as well as its precedent in Old Testament times.

The newness of Church Interpreting as a research area means that we have no well-established scholars in this field. The first articles on the topic have only appeared in the last decade and to our knowledge there have only been three PhDs in it so far — one each in Korean, German and English — though two more are about to be completed by facilitators Jonathan Downie and Sari Hokkanen. Talks by participants from both fields will initiate debate on the challenges and synergies we find between them, hopefully opening up new areas of interdisciplinary research and leading eventually to some practical outcomes of benefit to both Bible translators and those who serve as interpreters in a variety of Christian contexts.

In the coming weeks, we hope this site will become a hub of activity and communication. We invite each of you to visit the discussion page 'Getting to Know the Group' and to post a short self introduction, whether in writing or by recording a brief video. Please also be sure to post any materials you think would be helpful for participants to access before the seminar, whether readings to review, websites to visit, or videos that demonstrate the kind of practices being talked about.
